On February 4, HoneyWorks uploaded the animated music video for the 13th CHiCO with HoneyWorks single “Ugly Creatures” (Minikui Ikimono). The music video received positive reception online for its LGBTQ+ themes and has been viewed over 300,000 times on YouTube. The video follows a schoolgirl with short hair struggling with her feelings for her friend. She often hangs around her classroom drawing sketches of the girl and that girl’s boyfriend. The two appear close, which only hurts the protagonist more, as she watches her crush and the crush’s boyfriend. Eventually, these emotions come to a head and she explodes, running panicked away from her friend in class, tearing her illustrations, revealed to be of two girls. However, the other girl comes and tracks the protagonist down, making up with her. The song ends as the protagonist and her crush read manga and light novels together in the classroom, only for our protagonist to suddenly and mischievously kiss her friend, right as the boyfriend walks in…HoneyWorks’ video is not exactly that of a happy queer couple, however, it is a relatable LGBTQ struggle. Although the video lacks dialogue, with only the song playing over it, the main character’s struggles are apparent. She clearly feels for her friend and wishes to keep these emotions secret. However, having to watch her skip away with her boyfriend every day takes a serious toll. Eventually, the two are able to make up, and the protagonist’s cheeky kiss, done with a sly grin and funny face, shows her increased comfort with her sexuality.“Ugly Creatures” is the opening song to the TV Yuri anime Otherside Picnic. The series light novels, written by Iori Miyazawa make a cameo in the music, as the two girls read them in class. Otherside Picnic is currently streaming on Funimation with English subtitles.CHiCO and HoneyWork’s 13th Single CD, “Oninomori” and “Ugly Creatures” is available now on Amazon.
