Seasonal Anime ImpressionsWinter 2021Part 4It's been a few days since the last one of these. While that means I will be less topical, ... Well that's actually all it means. There is no up-side to this. Before we get to the anime that are the main dish today, let's first go through three anime I watched a few days ago but didn't write about at the time. These impressions will be even shorter and even more loose. [The stuff in italics are the synopses taken straight from MAL]Kemono JihenWhen a series of animal bodies that rot away after a single night begin appearing in a remote mountain village, Inugami, a detective from Tokyo who specializes in the occult, is called to investigate. While working the case, he befriends a strange boy who works in the field every day instead of going to school. Shunned by his peers and nicknamed "Dorota-bou" after a yokai that lives in the mud, he helps Inugami uncover the truth behind the killings—but supernatural forces are at work, and while Dorota-bou is just a nickname, it might not be the only thing about the boy that isn't human. Is good. There isn't really anything groundbreaking here and it's not an amazing execution of its already well-explored idea either. It's just good. The visuals are good, the music is good. Everything is good. Nothing will blow your socks off or any other part of clothing for that matter. But this one will almost definitely deliver a decent time to a pretty wide potential audience. Not dropped - 5/10Ex-Arm2014: Akira Natsume seems to almost have a phobia of electrical devices while also being very good at diagnosing them. He resolves to change himself for the better and get a girlfriend like his older brother did. ...But then Akira suddenly dies in an accident. 16 years later a special policewoman and her android partner retrieve and activate a highly advanced AI and superweapon called EX-ARM and put it into full control of their ship as a last resort. Turns out the AI is actually just Akira's brain! If you watched the first trailer for this, you will be pleasantly surprised by how nice this looks. If you didn't, you might be horrified by the visuals. It's not a good looking anime by any stretch. Not even decent. Especially facial animations are just... something to behold. The plot seems generic, cinematography is mostly bland, sometimes very jarring. But, and this might be a controversial opinion, some of the action scenes are actually pretty good? Also, far more importantly, looking at the incompetence that so much of this anime oozes is just very fun. This specific kind of bad is kinda rare and I am very, very happy this exists (this second part also seems to be a controversial opinion). Not dropped - 5/10Project Scard: Praeter no KizuProject Scard depicts the encounters and battles of those who have tattoos which possess the sealed powers of divine beasts and gods. The story is set in the Akatsuki Special Zone, a lawless zone in Tokyo."Helios" are those who use the ability of the tattoos to protect the city, "Artemis" are committed to maintain security and control, whilst having a strong commercial motive, and the "Public Security Special Service" are Scard Staff of the metropolitan police department. They live through the turbulent days to keep on going.Ahhh. It's GoHands doing their GoHands thing. If you don't know what that means, check this anime out. It's probably the most competent of their recent anime. That might not be saying much. Some scenes are genuinely almost cool though.I think it's impressive and maybe even commendable that GoHands seems to be able to have such a weird, distinct aesthetic and is still able to just continue making anime. It's just sad that these anime are bad and not the fun kind of bad either. Just the boring kind of bad. Oh and their aesthetic also isn't very good but I won't stop them from living their weird, garishly colored, terrible 3D dreams. Go GoHands!Dropped - 5/10---------------------------------------------------------SK∞ (SK8 the Infinity)Reki, a high school sophomore and skater, is addicted to "S," a highly secret and dangerous downhill skateboarding race that takes place in an abandoned mine. The skaters are especially wild about the "beefs," or heated battles that erupt in the races.Reki takes Langa, a transfer student returning to Japan after studying abroad, to the mine where the races are held. Langa, who has no skateboarding experience, finds himself pulled into the world of "S"...This is quite the surprise. I mainly just watched this in the first place because the synopsis sounded really silly. I didn't expect anthing from this other then it being a ridiculous skateboarding thing and me dropping it after a few minutes. And don't get me wrong, it is insanely ridiculous and very cheesy. If these aren't things you enjoy, pass on this one. But if you DO like yourself some over-the-top anime, this one might be for you.The character design are cool, the 2D animation is just incredible in places, the music is very solid and so is the cinematography. Structurally the story seems fairly generic-sportsy so far but with where we are in the plot right now, I can't really see them keep it like this for a whole 12 episodes. Also, if hot boys are your kind of thing, there might be additional incentives to check this out (though I find that hard to judge given that this doesn't apply to me).So yeah, if you like ridiculous and can deal with a structurally generic beginning, definitely watch this. Not dropped - 5/10Kai Byoui Ramune (Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist-)As long as hearts exist inside people, there will always be those who suffer. And then something "strange" enters their mind and causes a strange disease to manifest itself in the body. The illness, which is called a "mystery disease" is unknown to most, but certainly exists. There is a doctor and apprentice who fights the disease, which modern medicine cannot cure. His name is Ramune. He acts freely all the time, is foul-mouthed, and doesn't even look like a doctor! However, once he is confronted with the mysterious disease, he is able to quickly uncover the root cause of his patients' deep-seated distress and cure them. And beyond that...I'm very conflicted about this one. Seriously. I barely know how to write about it.Let's start with the stuff that's easy: The visuals are pretty lackluster. The animation is barely there, the character designs are quite boring and same for the cinematography. There was one scene that used some cool imagery though (but that was almost certainly taken straight from the manga). The music is there, I guess. That's it for the easy stuff. The concept sounds like something you are certain you heard before and you can probably think of a lot of other episodic anime that are very similar and there is, you think, also at least one with the exact same premise but you just can't remember which one it is nor if it even exists or if it is just an amalgamation of a lot of the others. And also a lot of the other similar anime are better, watching this just makes you want to continue watching Mushishi or rewatch Kuuchuu Buranko or, while you're thinking about episodic anime, you should definitely rewatch Kino no Tabi though that's pretty different. Or maybe all of that is just me.And that all sound pretty bad. But on the other hand, the "mysterious diseases" here seem pretty creative. But you don't really wanna spoil them in your Seasonal Anime Impressions. And the drama in this episode actually made you care even if you felt that it was a little bit unearned. You can't really imagine the next episode being as serious as this one with the concept that it has. But then again, you probably would have thought the same about this episode. But also you didn't find the comedy too funny. Oh, and the treatment that the doctor used seems like a certainly terrible idea in some situations and rather decent in others and it didn't really look to you like the anime acknowledged that. But the general moral lesson of this episode was certainly sensible. Also it didn't seem toooooo overdone to you (though definitely not original either). You don't really know how to feel about this anime but what the heck, you think, you can give it one more episode. Or maybe that's again just me.Not dropped - 5/10And that's it for today. I don't have any entertaining closing words right now but maybe you'll join me next time for the final post of the season with more fashionably late anime impressions.
