Despite director Taika Waititi’s assurances that he’s not giving up on his Akira, Warner Bros. may have other plans. In the studio’s updated movie slate, all big names like The Matrix 4, The Flash and Mortal Kombat are there, except for the live-action remake of Katsuhiro Otomo’s anime film. Following concerns over its script development schedule, Warner scrapped the film’s previous release date of May 21st 2021. The original worry was that it might clash with Waititi’s other directorial work Thor: Love and Thunder. But now Matrix 4 has the May ’21 slot, with no set time on the cards for Akira. Is it time to consign this rusty production from development hell to the scrap heap? Perhaps not, but things don’t look hopeful. Maybe Akira in live-action will have to wait a few more years yet.
