Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai - Perfomance teamHP / Facebook We are the performing group of the Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai, a cultural organization that has served the Okinawan community for more than 50 years and will proudly celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026.Okinawa is home to many distinctive traditions, including the sanshin—a three-stringed instrument made from snakeskin and wood that has shaped the islands’ musical heritage for centuries. Our group presents a variety of Okinawan performing arts. We perform Eisa, the vibrant drumming and dance tradition historically presented during the Obon season to honor ancestors, as well as Ryukyu Buyō, the classical performing art once reserved for the royal court of the Ryukyu Kingdom. These elegant dances, known for their refined movements and exquisite costuming, reflect the deep cultural sophistication of Okinawa’s history. Our members include Okinawans, Okinawan descendants, and non-Okinawan participants who share a deep appreciation for preserving and celebrating the richness of Okinawan culture.
