A shelf-perusing individual at a seedy DVD-rental shop might see a cute Watanabe Akio character design on the cover, and assume that the girl is a mahou shoujo named “Kanan.” However, it turns out the main character is instead named Hiiragi Chihaya and transforms into Magical Carmein. In fact, no character or location in the series is named “Kanan” which left me perplexed for the majority of my time watching. Every episode I started watching of the television series left me wondering “Surely in this episode they’ll explain who or what ‘Kanan’ is.” It’s not until the end of the story where it’s spectacularly revealed what the mystery of “Kanan” is.
