In an announcement by the Kumamoto Prefectural Government, it was revealed that there will be a TV anime to support revival efforts following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. The 12-episode series is titled Natsunagu! and will be produced by the Kumamoto government. The anime will premiere in January 2020 and will be set in Kumamoto, with natives of the prefecture on both the staff and cast rosters. The story will follow Natsuna Keyaki, who goes to Kumamoto in search of a friend she lost contact with after the quakes. Along the way she meets middle-schooler Izumi, who inspires a brand new outlook on her world in Natsuna. Yasuyuki Honda, who was previously an episode director on Kamisama Kiss and Mr. Osomatsu, steps up to direct this series. Yoshino Aoyama stars as Izumi after voicing main roles in Wake Up, Girls! and Scorching Ping Pong Girls. Natsunagu! is the first live TV anime produced by a local government which also runs for a whole anime viewing season. It will become tied with the history of Japan along with the devastation in Kumamoto, so here’s hoping it will make its mark and help restore the prefecture.
