Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon epitomizes what I dislike most about IP-driven entertainment. It’s a manga adaptation of an anime sequel to a popular series, made with little involvement from the original author. Though the artist and script-writers have created new characters and plot lines for the sequel, there’s a dutiful quality to the storytelling, as if the story had been focus-grouped into existence. What’s particularly frustrating about Yashahime is that it has a great premise, focusing on the half-demon daughters of Sesshomaru and InuYasha. That decision is in keeping with the spirit of InuYasha, which featured so many terrific female characters, from the villainous Kagura to the earnest Sango. Alas, only one of Yashahime’s principal cast members can hold a candle to these women: Towa, Sesshomaru’s daughter. Towa is depicted as...
