If you couldn’t face another session of sobbing through Your Lie in April, you’d best get ready for director Kyohei Ishiguro’s new anime film. Due for Japanese release on May 15th, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop has just released a trailer, and it coudn’t be much brighter or, indeed, bubblier. This movie is a ‘boy meets girl’ story like Naoshi Arakawa’s Your Lie in April, with both also linked by themes of music and art and the bonds they form between us. The boy in question, Cherry, loves haiku but gets anxious about talking to others. Our girl Smile always wears a mask to hide her braces. The two bump into each other one day in a shopping mall, and become friends over social media through sharing words and music. This is an original film for Flying Dog to celebrate the music and animation company’s 10th anniversary. Ishiguro will direct at Signal.MD and Sublimation, with a screenplay written by Dai Sato of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
