In November 2016, SherriPapini disappeared while out for a jog in Northern California. She was found three weeks later on a highway about 140 miles away, battered and bruised, and with a story about how she’d been abducted and tortured by two Hispanic women. It wasn't until 2020 that investigators used genetic genealogy—the same tech that caught the Golden State Killer—to find a match. That match led straight to JamesReyes, an ex-boyfriend from Sherri's past. A special "20/20" airing on Sept. ET takes viewers inside the six-year saga and investigation using newly obtained photos, 911 tapes and police interviews to lay out how investigators were able to unravel Papini's lies. SherriPapini now claims that the injuries she suffered were from Reyes, the ex-boyfriend whom prosecutors have said SherriPapini stayed with in Southern California during her disappearance. "To be clear, there was one thing that I lied about," SherriPapini said. Papini now claims that she described Reyes’ mother in the right police sketch. The private investigator was also able to discover that Reyes’ mother is Irish, which contradicts Papini’s earlier claims in the new documentary. SherriPapini, who was caught up in a notorious kidnapping hoax, is once again changing her story about whathappened to her in 2016.
