Faster Commutes Follow Once Metrolinx Will Close Line 6 For Essential System Infrastructure Improvements

Published May 14, 2026.Once complete, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will create a continuous rapid transit line stretching from Scarborough to Mississauga. Major step forward on Hamilton LRT. The expansion forms part of the broader GO Expansion programme, which will increase rail capacity across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The programme includes long-term investment in infrastructure to support rising ridership levels. Once fully operational, the line is expected to carry more than 123,000 riders each weekday and reduce travel times between Kennedy Station and Mount Dennis Station by nearly one hour. Metrolinx says the contract award follows a design development phase with the construction manager that began in December 2024, where teams oversaw design details and solutions for the required infrastructure upgrades through the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) model. To support these transit improvements, Metrolinxwill be undertaking major infrastructure upgrades, including additional track, GO station modifications, improved rail crossings, systems required for electrification... Once submissions are received, IO and Metrolinxwill evaluate the proposals, select a preferred proponent, and then negotiate a final contract. A successful proponent is expected to be announced in early 2019. An independent fairness monitor is overseeing the entire procurement process.
