Kristin Denise Smart was a 19-year-old American woman murdered by Paul Flores at the end of her first year on the campus of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Smart's father, siblings and other friends and relatives spoke at the hearing about the impact of her death on the family. Her brother, Matthew Smart, asked that Flores spend life in prison. KristinSmart went out with some friends on May 24, 1996, hoping to find a Friday night party to kick off the long Memorial Day weekend. But first, the 19-year-old called her parents... Flores claimed that he walked with Kristin until they came to his dorm, Santa Lucia Hall and that he left Kristin to walk the short distance back to her dorm at Muir Hall by herself. Kristin’s roommate was out of town for the weekend, so her absence wasn’t noted until Sunday. At that time, the car belonged to Paul Flores’ sister ErmelindaFlores, who lived near Cal Poly. After Smart’s disappearance, the car was transferred into their parent’s names. The parents stopped renewing the tags in 2010 and parked the Volkswagen in Rubin Flores’ garage.
