BANFF, ALTA – A $12.9 million five-year agreement between the Bow Valley Regional Transit Service Commission and Parks Canada will help purchase electricbuses as part of the overall goal to reduce car use and road emissions. The Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission (BVRTSC) is thrilled to add Banff’s first three battery electricbuses to theRoam Public Transitfleet. Built by Proterra, these climate-friendly buseswill service popular destinations in Banff, including the Banff Gondola... The first Proterra electricbuswill be purchased with funding from Parks Canada and the Government of Alberta’s GreenTRIP grant programme. The zero-emission vehicle will enter service in summer 2022 on popular routes for Lake Minnewanka and Johnston Canyon. Why theRoamTransitBanff Expansion Is Happening Now. The existing facility at 111 Hawk Ave. was designed to hold 32 buses under ideal conditions, though the study says it is effectively full at about 28 because of clearance and circulation limits. According to Bean, three electricbuses are operating in the Town of Banff and another two are being prepared for service in Canmore and Banff National Park. “By early 2023, RoamTransit will have 10 electric vehicles in service, representing 30 per cent of the total fleet,” said Bean. Even if we go back to before the pandemic in 2015, we had seven buses, and we’ve grown to a fleet of 30. We’ve gone from ridership under 500,000 up to over 1.5 million in 2019. In 2021, we were just under 700,000, and we’re starting to see that growth come back. Banff National Park is growing its fleet of electricbuses with an extended partnership deal between local bus operator RoamTransit, the Alberta government and Parks Canada. Roam is expanding the fleet to increase service frequency to top locations.
