Alphonse Gabriel Capone, a.k.a. Scarface (a nickname given after a fight, when his face was sliced with a blade), was destined to become an Alcatraz inmate. His life of crime started as a child, when he ran with street gangs. A Look at Cell 181: AlCapone’s infamous stay at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary began in 1934, when he was transferred to the island prison in an effort to sever his influence over organized crime while behind bars. While at Alcatraz, Capone, who’d been diagnosed with syphilis during a medical exam at the Atlanta penitentiary, started showing signs of the disease, including dementia. The real story of AlCapone on Alcatraz Island, heretofore guarded by official silence and censorship as grim as the battlements of “The Rock,” was obtained by The Examiner exclusively yesterday.
